Cadette's Help with Christmas Community Service ~ Deliver Fruit Baskets to Elderly/Shut In's

SANTA'S HELPERS

Submitted by: Jayde R. Paul (Jan 8, 2002)

Cadette Troop #3185 Public Relations Coordinator

These Westmer Cadette Girl Scouts are pictured here helping with the New Boston Community Christmas Baskets. It's a tradtion for these girls to do as much community service during Christmas as possible. Jayde and Patti have been helping with community service since they were in Daisy Girl Scouts, eight years ago! For the past five or six years they have helped with the New Boston Christmas Baskets and they did again this year too. They delivered plates of fruit to the Elderly - Shut Ins in the community. The girls sang Christmas Carols at each door as they delivered the plates. After all the plates were delivered they took gifts to "New Boston residents" of the LynnCrest Nursing Home in Aledo and stayed to visted with their adopted Grand Parents.

Each year the girls adopt at least one needy family in the community and raise money to help make their Christmas a little better. This year the Cadette Troop invited the Juniors from Group Troop #5158 to help them. Everyone pitched in to make cookies and candy for a bake sale. Goodies were sold at the New Boston Bank, Grocery Store and Bingo. The goal was to make $100.00 and they made that plus more thanks to the wonderful people in our community. The girls used the money to go shopping for their adopted family. Then the next day they dressed up like Santa and his elves and delivered the presents to the very excited little ones.

This year they once again held their annual MITTEN TREE. A tree was placed in the New Boston Grocery Store to collect mittens and gloves. These will be donated to the Elementary and local Churches for kids who don't have gloves or lost their gloves. Together a combined total of over 100 hours was spent helping people in the community. Kids helping kids...that's what these girls are all about!

THE ULTIMATE CADETTE CHALLENGE

The Cadette Challenge is an award that Cadette's have to earn before they can work on their SILVER AWARD.  On Nov 16th & 17th mom took Corrie, Me and Patti to an overnight workshop where we along with about 100 other Cadette's and Senior Girl Scouts earned our Challenge pins.  We had a great time learning things like massage therapy, self defence, how to do braids and lots of other cool things.

This workshop was designed as a FUN way to look inside of ourselves and learn to be the best we can be while we earn the Challenge...THANKS MEREDITH ~ we had a GRRRRRREAT Time! We enjoyed this workshop so much that we are working on one for our Service Unit! Hope to hold it in the late Spring!

Here are a few pictures we took during the weekend. Hope you enjoy them as much as we enjoyed our weekend!

WESTMER GIRL SCOUTS ATTEND

COUNCIL "S.T.A.R." EVENT

Gril Scouts are not just for little girls as this event proved! On Sunday May 4, 2003 Jayde and Tiffany B along with their mothers attended the S.T.A.R. Event hosted by Girl Scouts of the Mississippi Valley, Inc. It was held at the Four Points-Sheraton in Rock Island, Illinois. The S.T.A.R Event, formerly known as "The Honors Tea" is a special awards ceremony held to honor local Girl Scout recipients of Special Teen Awards and Recognitions. Hundreds of Teens were honored for their work on Community Service Projects, service to Girl Scouts and many other gifts to their community. As well as those earning Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards. Two college Scholarships were also awarded to girls who demonstrated outstanding service to Girl Scouts and their communities.

Jayde along with several other Mercer County Cadette Girl Scouts were honored for their hard work as members of the 2002 - 2003 Cadette Congress. The Cadette Congress is a group of Cadette Girl Scouts, that meet several times a year to plan an event or trip offered to all Cadettes in the Mississippi Valley Girl Scout Council (GSMV). GSMV is split into three geographical areas, and there is a Cadette Congress and Senior Senate in each area. Elections for President, Vice President, Historian, Secretary and Treasurer are held each Spring. We are part of AREA III - Which includes Henry, Knox, Mercer, Rock Island and Warren Counties. During the 2003 Troop year Jayde held the office of CO-Historian/Secretary for Area III.

This year Area III Cadette Congress planned and held two events. The first event was held in Novemeber at Wildlife Prairie Park in Peoria. The girls spent the night at the park as they earned their Wildlife Interest Project Patches they learned about the night time habitates of local animals through hands on workshops and a night time hike through the park. The second event was held in March at the Junior Theater in Davenport, Iowa. Cadette Girl Scouts from all over the Council gathered to earn their Performing Arts IPP's as they got a little taste of "Theater Life".

This years S.T.A.R. Event was planned and presented by Senior Girl Scouts Sara A and Jacqui L along with a special S.T.A.R. Event committee. Thanks to all of these Leaders of tomorrow for paving the way for those girls brave enough to follow in their foot steps.
